Methods
Several years ago we developed a Remote underwater Monitoring System (RMS) for investigating lobster predation (Watson et al., 1998). It is very similar to the LTV system we use to observe lobster traps (
Lobster TV). We have waterproof, low-light, B&W video cameras mounted underwater and connected via waterproof conducting cables to a buoy on the surface. The buoys contain all the necessary batteries and electronics to run the system and continuously transmit live video to a receiver in the UNH CML; where it is recorded using a time-lapse video recorder. An array of far-red LEDs makes it possible to continuously monitor the activity of animals within view of the camera for 24-48 hours.
